Modern Cyber Threats & How to Defend Your Assets
We want to share a quick story that highlights how cybersecurity threats are becoming more common, and more personal, for individuals managing significant assets.
The Story:
An individual that we know, let’s call him Mark, received a call from “his bank,” alerting him to suspicious activity and urging him to move funds to a “safe” account. The caller ID looked legitimate. The voice on the line knew just enough personal information to sound convincing.
Within 20 minutes, Mark had approved a six-figure transfer... straight to a fraudulent account.
Unfortunately, this type of fraud is increasingly common. And it’s not just phone scams. We’re seeing:
- Email hacking and impersonation (someone pretending to be you or me)
- Phishing attempts disguised as financial institutions or government notices
- Malware or ransomware on personal devices that can capture passwords or access sensitive files
- Fake websites or investment portals that mirror real ones almost perfectly
- Public Wi-Fi breaches where people log into accounts on unsecured networks
Why It Matters to You
Your financial life is more connected than ever, which means your cybersecurity is just as important as your investment strategy. One breach could lead to identity theft, account fraud, or unauthorized transfers.
Here’s How to Stay Safe:
- Use strong, unique passwords (and a password manager if needed)
- Enable two-factor authentication on email, banking, and investment apps
- Be cautious of urgent or unusual requests, always verify with a phone call
- Avoid clicking unknown links or downloading attachments from unfamiliar sources
- Use secure, private internet connections, especially when accessing financial info
